Urban green space epidemiological studies increasing report effect sizes for health and wellbeing outcomes stratified by gender, but few studies have specifically investigated gender differences in relationships between green space and health and wellbeing. Differences in the strength and direction of green space effect sizes across population subgroups such as gender, age, and occupation have significant implications for (e)valuation of urban green space ecosystem services. This paper: (i) highlights findings of a recent study which investigated gender differences in relationships between amount of green space in the residential environment and two subjective measures of mental health (perceived stress and mental wellbeing), for a sample of three disadvantaged urban communities in Scotland (Robertson et al., in prep); (ii) discusses the implications of the above research in the context of (e)valuation of urban green space health and wellbeing ecosystem services. The research was undertaken as part of the Scottish Government ‘GreenHealth’ research programme.
