Abstract:

This paper presented the findings of archival research into the early history and collections of Glasgow School of Art Library, covering the period 1845-1900. Specific themes included: the role of the Select Committee on Arts and Manufactures in mandating early design libraries; networks of exchange and patronage between the library of the central School of Design in London and its provincial satellites; the role of the 1851 Great Exhibition in early design library classifications and arrangements; and the role of the artist-librarian in 19th century design libraries.
