Abstract:

This chapter will examine the modernization of Britain’s street furniture in postwar Britain, and the way it was deliberately used by the state to introduce good design into people’s everyday lives. Drawing upon original material, it will address the effect of an official interpretation of good taste upon the materiality of the street, and the debate that ensued as a result.
