The aim of encouraging ‘arts, manufactures, and commerce’ in Britain through drawing education was the focus for disagreement throughout the long nineteenth century and beyond. The production of technical representations (in print, exhibitions and the factory) by jobbing designers and factory draughtsmen presents one under-researched area where these cultural conflicts can be addressed in more detail. In this chapter, neither a celebration of the ‘art of the engineer’ nor an attack on the ‘coercive’ nature of worker education in drawing, I discuss the strategies of workers who aimed to exploit the ‘machine dreams’ of this period to claim professional and cultural status by acquiring and demonstrating drawing skills.

These technical representations are under-researched because they do not readily fit into established academic categories. We see that technical draughtsmen and engineers in Britain largely trained themselves through copying from a wide range of examples and conventions; their drawing strategies were ambiguous and multivalent and must be addressed in a cross-disciplinary way. Draughtsmen became invisible because their status was disputed and problematic, squeezed by issues about creative control and autonomy in the workplace. As ‘visual technicians’ both elite engineers and factory draughtsmen trained themselves to draw for the mechanical arts through copying from a wide range of artistic, artisanal and architectural precedents and were thus constantly negotiating how different kinds of visual display related to professional status.

But within the range of occupations inside engineering, draughtsmen became a further sub-group of even more compromised status. This chapter takes examples of working practice in the factory, and also from the work of illustrators for print, to consider how the process of making these drawings either aided or frustrated the working ambitions of the draughtsmen who produced them. Moving inside this artworld of technical drawing at a time of expanding visual economies gives a textured account of the ways in which practitioners sought to gain authority by visual means by appealing to both art and industry. The findings of this chapter are in sympathy with Patrick Joyce’s account of autodidact workers and narratives of ‘class’ (1994), but more immediately, engage with histories and philosophies of art and design education in the shadow of John Ruskin. In a period when drawing was widely touted as a civic accomplishment like the ability to read or to reason, the development of art and design discourses cannot be understood without considering equally the development of these technical styles.
