Abstract:

This presentation prefaced a conference strand at the ELIA-sponsored European Forum on Research Degrees in Art and Design (EUFRAD) on the tenets of artistic research that underpin higher research degrees by creative practice in the art academies. Covering tensions between textual and artistic outputs, the paper introduced the strand debate by positing that there is a particular epistemology to research degrees in art and design that might suggest that the dichotomy is less than useful to the art academy.
