Eradicating fuel poverty in Scotland presents a significant challenge; currently, 44% of households in rural areas are fuel poor. In these areas, many homes are fitted with electric storage heating systems as the primary heat source, which can be costly to run and inefficient in providing warmth when needed. Consequently, wood-burning stoves are increasingly used as a more affordable and reliable heating option. However, in energy-efficient homes, these stoves can overheat the room they occupy, leaving other areas of the home uncomfortably cool. This paper presents the results of an assessment of a low-cost heat transfer system in a case-study dwelling. Comprising a duct and an in-line fan, the system is operated to channel warm air from above the wood-burning stove located in the living room to pre-heat a bedroom located 5 metres away. Air temperature measurements indicate that this approach shows significant promise; however, challenges such as fan noise were encountered, affecting occupant acoustic comfort and, consequently, user behaviour. While the temperature results confirm the feasibility of this method, the challenges encountered provide valuable insights for future enhancements of the heat transfer system.
