Renal pathology is difficult to teach and understand, partly due to the convoluted anatomy of the structures. Despite the drawbacks of portraying the histopathology of three dimensional microscopic structures, like vasculature, through two-dimensional visualisations, there is a persisting shortage of three-dimensional educational tools for pathology. Novel
Digital and 3D Pathology workflows in medical research allow for unprecedented accuracy in the creation of 3D models but remain an untapped resource for the field of medical education. Within this context, the research presented aims to develop an interactive educational tool containing accurate 3D models and information on the anatomy of glomerular structures and
the diseases that affect them.

This chapter presents a methodological and technological framework to create “3D Glomerulopathy”, an application focused on the glomerulus, a vital part of the kidney’s filtration system, and the diseases that affect it. It outlines how volume rendering techniques
were used to translate a 3D microscopy dataset into a detailed 3D model of glomerular disease. It presents 3D pathology visualisations and explains how 3D modelling software was utilised to develop accurate models of the glomerular layers even when the original z-stack was not available; and how game development software and cognitive load theory principles were used
to integrate the models into a comprehensive interactive application. Essentially, this chapter highlights how 3D pathology visualisations, which are currently limited to medical research, could also serve as powerful educational tools, revolutionising the way complex three dimensional pathology structures are taught and understood by educators and students.
