Gerontechnology is a relatively young discipline when compared with the established field of gerontology that has published scholarly research since the 1940’s. Like Gerontology it is multidisciplinary, however its key focus is the impact of technology interaction, experience and utility to an ageing population. Employing a critical lens, this chapter will explore the expansion of gerontechnology, its wider impact on gerontology, digital health, design and social sciences. It will highlight the role that emerging technologies (e.g., AI, robotics) will have on the future of gerontechnology research and impact. It will document and discuss how gerontechnology can and will play a role optimising the lived experience, health, wellbeing, age-friendly cities and communities etc., It will reflect on the peripheral challenges exposed for humans as they navigate the life course, society and exposure to technology innovations that can enhance or challenge ageing; and where research has a role as enabler, distilling and sharing how research can basically make it better through quality applied work that enables and doesn’t disable QoL. Moreover, the chapter will elicit considerations for the research community to truly advance critical thinking and discourse, and conceivable foresights for the gerontechnology field.
