| Abstract: | This chapter introduces "cinema of ecological grief": a self-reflective filmmaking practice that confronts ecological loss and counters the cultural disavowal of nature. I define ecological grief as the premature displacement from earthly environments and their disappearing organisms (flora, fauna, air, water, landscape), and bring this concept into dialogue with cinema. Reading film through the lens of ecological crisis reveals how lives are vanishing in ways that are not only visible but felt in the body. This framework advocates a reorientation in how more-than-human lives are seen and framed as losable through varied sensory engagements. Though moving images are shaped by human-centred ways of seeing, filmmakers can nonetheless act on behalf of more-than-human worlds, producing images that unsettle the prevailing status quo. |
