Dr. Shichao Zhao is a Lecturer in Innovation and Emerging Technology in the Innovation School at Glasgow School of Art. He is an interdisciplinary researcher with a background including Fine Art, Interactive Media Design, Human-Computer Interaction. He is also a traditional Chinese painter and calligrapher with exhibited work.
His previous research explores the design of interactive technologies to support the cross-cultural appreciation, understanding, and experience of cultural heritage. One of his recent works demonstrated novel mobile and gesture-based interactive technology installations to capture non-verbal emotion and storytelling from the act of producing painting and calligraphy. He also has a particular interest in interdisciplinary research methods, he designed a practical method of deconstructing cultural elements based on the Human-Computer Interaction perspective to enhance cross-cultural appreciation of Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage. This method provides a specific foundational framework that assists cross-cultural audiences to better understand the cultural significance of cultural heritage.
Previously, as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Digital Archaeology and Heritage at Bournemouth University, he contributed to exploring potential collaborative research opportunities and grants in different subjects and with multiple departments. After this, he was a Research Fellow in Participatory Research Communication Design in the School of Design at the University of Leeds. He utilised Participatory Action Research as the main method to explore the use of interactivity to reach out to different audiences and demonstrate how art-based projects tackle societal challenges through online exhibitions in a Horizon 2020 research project titled ‘Acting on the Margins: Arts as Social Sculpture (AMASS)’.
